Alex Brown is a consultant to magazine publishers, specializing in manufacturing and magazine management. Her clients include AARP, The Atlantic, Better Homes & Gardens, Boys’ Life, Builder, Business Week, Dwell, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Macworld, New England Journal of Medicine, Red Herring, Rolling Stone, Sesame Street, Scientific American, Smithsonian, Taunton Press, and Wired. She has operated Printmark, a consulting practice, since 1984.


Previously, she was associate publisher of Small Boat Journal and manufacturing director of Hemmings Motor News. She started in the publishing industry as an assistant editor at House Beautiful.


Her feature articles have been published in Publishing Executive, Folio:, Macworld, How, and from 1991 through 1993 she wrote a fortnightly column on production for MagazineWeek. She leads seminars for Folio:, the MPA, MagazineTech, the Florida Magazine Association, and other groups.


Her first book, In Print: Text and Type, was published by Watson-Guptill in 1989.


She has developed print production software that estimates manufacturing and distribution costs for magazine launches and ongoing budgeting.


She received her BA from Bennington College, and subsequently studied at New York University’s Graduate School of the Arts. Her professional training includes programs at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
